Cockroaches are one of the most persistent pest problems in central Oklahoma homes and businesses. Murray Pest Control receives cockroach calls year-round — they don’t have a season in Oklahoma’s climate. But the approach that works depends heavily on which species you’re dealing with, which most Oklahoma homeowners don’t know to ask about.
The Three Most Common Oklahoma Cockroaches
German Cockroach
Small (1/2 inch), tan with two dark stripes. Lives exclusively indoors, near heat and moisture sources. Fastest-breeding cockroach — a single pair can produce thousands of descendants in a year. The most difficult to eliminate and the most common cause of persistent cockroach problems in Oklahoma kitchens.
American Cockroach
Large (1.5-2 inches), reddish-brown. Comes in from outdoors — sewers, drains, mulch beds, and crawl spaces. Often called a “palmetto bug.” Commonly found in Stillwater and Edmond basements, bathrooms, and near floor drains. Controls differently from German cockroaches.
Smokybrown Cockroach
Dark mahogany brown, found throughout central Oklahoma. Enters from trees, vegetation, and leaf litter around the home exterior. More of an outdoor species that enters seeking moisture. Particularly common in older Stillwater neighborhoods with mature trees near structures.
Prevention: What Actually Works
- Eliminate food sources: Store food in sealed containers, clean behind and under appliances regularly, don’t leave pet food out overnight
- Fix moisture problems: German cockroaches need water to survive — fix dripping faucets, seal under-sink areas, improve ventilation in humid spaces
- Seal exterior entry points: American and Smokybrown cockroaches enter from outside — caulk gaps around pipes, doors, and windows; repair damaged door sweeps
- Manage mulch and vegetation: Keep mulch 6 inches from the foundation; trim vegetation away from the structure to reduce harborage
- Regular perimeter treatment: A professional exterior perimeter treatment 3-4 times per year significantly reduces cockroach pressure from outdoor species
Why Over-the-Counter Products Underperform
Consumer sprays repel cockroaches — they don’t eliminate colonies. German cockroaches hiding in wall voids detect the repellent and scatter to other areas of your home. This is why DIY spray attempts often appear to make cockroach problems “spread.” Professional gel baits placed in cracks and crevices where cockroaches travel are significantly more effective because the bait is consumed and shared through the colony, eventually reaching reproductive individuals.
When to Call a Professional
If you see cockroaches during daylight hours — German cockroaches are nocturnal — the infestation is likely severe enough that the population is exceeding its harborage capacity. Daytime sightings mean significant professional intervention is needed. For American and Smokybrown cockroaches, seeing them regularly inside despite sealing efforts means the entry point hasn’t been identified and treated. Murray Pest Control provides comprehensive cockroach programs for Stillwater, Edmond, and central Oklahoma homes and businesses.
